It signifies a covenant relationship with God. This means that church membership is not like joining a club or organisation, but involves belonging to God’s family.

It symbolises a covenant relationship with God’s people locally. Baptists believe that the local church is gathered by the will of God and lives through the working of his spirit.

It admits the believer to the place where Christ and his authority are made known to the church. Baptists believe that the local church is independent and that the members’ meeting is the place where God’s will and guidance for the church is sought.

It enables the believer to grow and develop in the faith. Corporate fellowship, teaching and sharing the Lord’s Supper are intended to nurture each individual through commitment and involvement in the local church.

It empowers the local church in worship, fellowship and mission. We gather together for mutual benefits and support rather than for private enjoyment.

It offers the believer the possibility of positive church discipline - which promotes healthy discipleship. Jesus teaches the importance of putting relationships right before contemplating worship and lays down principles for settling serious disputes.

It links the believer with those of like faith everywhere. In the local church, we express our part in the global church and, every time we celebrate the Lord’s Supper, we affirm the eternal church that will one day be united with God.
